Ode to Yoga-lates

O, Yoga-lates
I inhale into the pretzel,
and as I balance on my left foot,
stretching my arms toward the ceiling,
I exhale into my next incarnation
as tangled computer wire,
my head hangs in doward facing dog and
my muscles are a wad of rubber bands.
O, Yoga, O (Pil)Lates!
You leave me feeling like
a flacid, popped balloon--
forgotten on the kitchen counter
destined to be the companion of
the ripe banana peel
that, even now, dwells
in the grey flip-top garbage can--
with very sore thighs.

Our Only Casualty

G and F visited last weekend to celebrate my (belated) birthday. We all had a good time hanging out by the river, drinking (though this time no one ended up dancing on the speakers at The Hose), and eating. G was our only casualty: after chopping jalapeños…he touched his eye! G wailed in agony as the burn went behind his contact lens. Once the situation was under control we offered G an eye-patch so he could at least play the part of a pirate and maintain some dignity, but he refused. Arrrrr.

W.H.O. Health Alert

Health Update for Those Travelling to Saskatoon This Weekend: All signs of the flu epidemic have disappeared from the Machuca/Veitch region, despite the attempts by the terrorist group SSS (Stephen Spreads Sickness) to contaminate the spoon supply. However, recent increases in pollen production have caused an all-out cartel war in the sinus region. Travellers are urged to carry kleenex as protection from WMD (Wet Mucous Discharge).

In other news, we went to a party on Tuesday night. Actually, it wasn't a party, it was a group of English nerdlingers getting together to drink President's Choice beer (ugh) and play Beer Die (at which, by the way, Lindell excelled...until he got so drunk he kept throwing the dice too hard and missing the table all together, hee hee hee).

Jerkiness, etc.

Ever been in the situation where you run into someone on the street and you kind of have to say hello because they're probably going to see you and if you don't you'll be the jerk? That was the story of my day.

This is how it went. L and I wake up and decide it would be a good idea if for once we went somewhere and actually did all the reading we need to do. We decide that it would be really cool to go hang out at the Broadway Roastery for a few hours and read like madmen/women. But it took us 4 hours to leave the house. Yes. Four hours. Why? I DON'T KNOW!!! For some reason we are the absolute slowest people ever; we woke up at 10 and by the time we had breakfast, checked our email, showered, L played the accursed Civilization, I blogged, I talked to my mom, we made the bed, L did his hair ........ you get the picture....by the time all these various and sundrie tasks were completed it was 2pm.

Anyway. We leave the house and start walking up Broadway. And whom do I see but the prof I TA'd for this past year. I always feel weird around her because I'm not sure if she likes me or not...sniff sniff. But she was like 10 inches away, so I had to say hello or forever be a jerk. I tapped her on the shoulder and said hello. She told me and L about a good shoe sale (which we later checked out and, of course, I bought new trainers, hee hee) and introduced us to her friend. And then I suddenly felt extreeeeeemely uncomfortable. Like I was interrupting or like I didn't know what else to say or like I was a general dufus...so I kind of blurted out "well, see you around!" and took off. L claims that she was about to say we should hang out (she's only like 30 something so she's at all the grad parties), but I cut her off and ran away. Why all the weirdness? Who knows.

Not 15 minutes later I run into two more Eng. Dept. types. By this time I was at the afore mentioned shoe sale trying on some trainers. When we run into the English Dudes-- C and S. After a minute or so of small talk, I start to remember the last time C and I hung out...the infamous last day of exams on which I and a few of my other classmates drank for 12 hours, belly danced, threw up, and skipped home singing the Smurf song. (Yes, sadly, all that really happened). Then we ran out of things to say to each other, so S started saying something about the cross trainers I was trying on. Meanwhile, the sales lady started to inch up behind us...quietly observing as I handed the trainers to S...her eyes widening as S turned them over to explain which parts of the sole will absorb impact...then as we started to walk toward the intersection she climbed on L's back and pulled his hair.

No, that didn't happen. As you might've guessed. But she did think we were gonna steal the shoes.

Anyway, after the sales lady followed us around I decided things were weird enough and we should say good bye. But just before I actually initiated the good byes there was the awkward, silent moment when we or they should've said something like "hey, let's go get a coffee". But we didn't because our original purpose was to go and do our reading for our blasted theses!

So, finally after buying myself a pair of shoes, a t-shirt for L, and a dress for me (I got carried away...sidewalk sales do that to me) we finally made it to the Roastery.

Once there, we read for about an hour. Then one of my most hated things happened. I overheard someone's conversation about a trip to Guatemala and my reaction was to leave and fast because if I had to listen to this girl say "baina" instead of "ballena" one more time...I might've had to pour my nutty vanilla late on her head.

So. In conclusion, today I very narrowly avoided total jerkdom.

Mmm that was yummy

So, L and I went to see Sin City last night. Not a bad movie, really, considering that it was based on a comic strip. Lot's of excess gutted gore, lot's of T&A--in other words, the usual Hollywood action movie. BUT (and that "but" is a big one) what is up with all the woman beating in this movie? I can't think of ONE woman that appeared in the movie that did not get beaten or murdered in some way. Granted the men in the film get their asses kicked too and at least on a couple of occasions by a woman. So you could argue that the pain is distributed somewhat evenly among the sexes. But here's what really got to me...all the women that got punched seemed to *like* it. They'd get punched and then bat their eyes and smile as if to say "Mmm that was yummy, can I have another?"

I don't get it.

I guess, considering the drama that took place in the hallway the other night it's pretty reasonable to be stuck on this track, but I promise to move on to other topics soon. Untill then, can anyone explain the woman beating in this movie??

Thanks.

Trailer Park Wednesday

Hello! Okay, so after a long and super tedious consideration of the benefits of blogging, I've decided to give it a go. There's absolutely no theme or purpose to my blog ecxept that I want to keep in touch with everyone and this way you'll all know what's going on in my life. So, here's what happened to me on Wednesday...

Around 7:40pm I was busy chatting with my prof for my online Textual Scholarship course (which means I was really busy trying to work in big words like "feminist dystopian fiction" or "narrative prosthesis") when L and I heard all this yelling in the hallway. Our neighbor across the hall and his lady (whose orgasms we've all had the dubious pleasure of hearing) were blasting insults at each other at the loudest and screechiest possible voices. Deciding that they would probably call each other a few names and then start having super loud sex we just ignored them. Then L heard the girl yell "somebody help me" so, being a decent guy, he went out to the hallway and asked if everything was okay. The dude had the chick by the hair and she was like "does everything look fucking okay?!" Classy. So then he asked her if she wanted him to call the cops and she ignored him and continued fighting. So he came back inside and we stood by the door listening (muy comico) until I heard the chick yell "you punched me, bastard!!" That's when I decided to call the cops because I thought for sure
they were gonna kill each other soon. The cops, however, needed to know their apartment number, and L and I couldn't remember if the numbers go up or down in that particular direction...so I decided to undertake a mission. The dude and chick had wandered back into their apartment to continue fighting, so the coast was clear for me to sneak out into the hallway to discover their apartment number. Standing outside their door I heard the girl yelling about how she wanted her shit, her beer, and her curtains and how she's not psycho just because she loves him. Whatever. I kind of felt bad for her...until the cops arrived. Why is that, you ask? Well, when the RCMP were coming up the stairs the fighting started to get louder and louder and the girl started screaming like a banshee. I don't know if the dude was hitting her, but he was definitely on top of her because she was yelling "get off me!" So anyway, the cops get there and they pull the guy off her-- L and I were listening from behind our door and we could hear the cops telling the dude to put his hands behind his head, etc. And what was the chick doing while the cops were trying to get the no-good dude to calm down?

Of course, she was crying and yelling "you're hurting him!...he didn't do anything wrong!!"

And that's when I stopped feeling sorry for her. Chicks who like to get beaten up are wacky. I mean, really! The dude punches you and you're mad at the police for making him stop? Okay, um, then don't have you stupid domestic dispute in the HALLWAY!!! Buggers. All of them.

So that was pretty much that. We just had to give the cops our witness statements.

It was really sad, pathetic, and very disturbing.
